++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Foreword In the 1700s, the British architect William Chambers crossed the seas to China where he was inspired by gardens, buildings, food and culture that few Europeans had ever encountered at that time. On returning to England, Chambers was determined to share his wonder at the beauty of China by building an example of the most astounding and monumental of the buildings he saw: a pagoda. Historic Royal Palaces has recently restored and reopened Chambers’s masterpiece, which still stands as part of the royal palace at Kew in London. This historic feat was achieved with the enlightened and generous support of Mr. Yuan. Through Mr. Yuan’s sponsorship of the restoration, the pagodas in Nanjing and London are united. Together they tell a ‘tale of two pagodas’. Jiwen’s exploration of the Porcelain Tower’s story offers a new perspective on what was once a wonder of the world. Although that tower is now lost, people can experience something of its splendor in the museum and the new temple. Those who built the Porcelain Tower and the Great Pagoda at Kew could never have imagined that the stories of these two monuments, standing in cities so far apart, would one day be united in friendship and collaboration. I hope that you will enjoy this new book, and that one day you will visit London in order to continue the story at the Great Pagoda at Kew.
